TONES OF TORONTO

This documentary special provides a view of the city through the lens of four famous urban photographers. Meet these unique artists who have been drawing the portrait of Toronto with their photo cameras. People and urban infrastructure create unique rhythms that influence these artists and their extraordinary creations.

We will follow them each step of the way while they reveal the hidden life of a modern artist. They will tell their stories, explain why they enjoy photography and reveal hidden gems across the city.

Each photographer introduces the city of Toronto, creates a new perception, and inspires millions of people every day by posting their outstanding pictures on social media platforms.

These talented photographers have their own exceptional style and certain techniques, which they use to show-off the city from their personal vision and perspective. Artists’ imagination combines with Toronto’s life cycle, weather conditions, light, and many other factors, which help them to create their remarkable shots.

As life gets busy, we tend to overlook the beauty of our city; thus, through the eyes of photographers, we have a great chance to see the city in the way we have never seen before. They inspire us. They encourage us to appreciate the place in which we live in, and inspire us to fall in love with it over and over again.

  • Creating storyboards for every sequence was a necessity at this production. We spend lots of time thinking about the shots and filled multiple sketchbooks. The real challenge was to align the footage with edited pieces so that the timing was perfect.
  • This is the Director of the film Ivan, he was also playing a homeless person on the street. The weather was on our side and it was sunny and nice outside. We shot an opening sequence in 3 days waiting for the right moments to come up.

  • This sequence is one of the most creative sequence we shot for the film. It features Lucan, one of the photographers, at his house waking up and realizing that he became famous overnight. We created crazy rigs with cameras to allow it to move in directions that a regular tripod will not allow.
  • Rooftopping sequence is one of the most challenging sequences in terms of logistics and permits and approvals but definitely the most memorable. We were able to see the city in a way that very few people can. You don’t need a penthouse to enjoy this view.

  • Snowstorms became one of our best friends for the film. We went downtown Toronto several times to capture the city’s mood and feel. When people hide from this weather we set up our rigs to shoot the empty streets of Toronto.

Thanks to street photographers, we can enjoy photos of Toronto snapped more than a century ago. Thanks to the present day photographers, future generations will be able to see the city, which for them will be centuries-old past. Photographers are time chroniclers who forever preserve the precious moments of the city life, thus making history.
